ADHD Assessment in Melbourne

Helping children and families understand attention, impulsivity, and executive function through thorough, neurodiversity-affirming assessment.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in children, affecting concentration, impulse control, and the ability to regulate behaviour. A thorough assessment can bring clarity and open the door to the right support.

At Spectrum House Psychology, our ADHD assessments are designed to give you a complete picture of how your child's brain works — not just a checklist. We use a combination of standardised cognitive and behavioural rating scales, clinical interviews with parents and teachers (where appropriate), and direct observation to form a comprehensive profile.

Our assessments are neurodiversity-affirming. We believe ADHD is a difference, not a deficiency, and our reports reflect that. Alongside diagnostic conclusions, you'll receive practical, user-friendly recommendations tailored to your child's strengths and challenges — for use at home, at school, and with other health professionals.

ADHD assessments are appropriate for children who are experiencing persistent difficulties with attention or focus, are frequently impulsive or hyperactive in ways that affect daily functioning, are struggling in school despite apparent ability, or have previously been assessed but parents or teachers want a clearer picture.

Cost, Medicare & NDIS

ADHD assessments at Spectrum House are privately billed. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP may allow you to claim Medicare rebates for associated psychology sessions. NDIS participants with psychology funding in their plan may be able to use plan-managed or self-managed funds toward the cost. Please contact us to discuss fees.

Do I Need a Referral?

A GP referral is not required to book an ADHD assessment, but a Mental Health Treatment Plan can help with Medicare rebates for follow-up therapy sessions. We recommend discussing with your GP if ongoing psychology support may be needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an ADHD assessment take?

A full ADHD assessment typically spans 2–3 sessions. We take the time needed to gather a thorough picture rather than rushing the process.

What is the age range for ADHD assessments?

We assess children and adolescents from age 5 through to 17. Please contact us to discuss assessment for young adults.

Can an ADHD assessment be used to access school adjustments?

Yes. Our assessment reports include specific, school-based recommendations and meet the requirements for most Australian schools applying for adjustments or funding support.

Will my child receive a diagnosis at the end of the assessment?

Our psychologists provide a clinical formulation and diagnostic conclusion within the report. A formal medical diagnosis must be confirmed by a GP or paediatrician, though our assessment forms the basis of that conversation.
