An autism assessment can be a turning point for families — bringing clarity, language, and access to the right support. Spectrum House provides gold-standard autism assessments using research-validated tools in a warm, child-focused environment.
Our autism assessments use the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd Edition) alongside cognitive and adaptive behaviour assessments, detailed developmental history, and parent interviews. This multi-method approach aligns with best-practice guidelines for autism diagnosis in Australia.
We take a neurodiversity-affirming approach throughout. Our team recognises that autism is a natural part of human variation, and our reports are written to reflect your child's full profile — their strengths alongside their challenges — so that the people supporting them can do so most effectively.
Following the assessment, we provide a comprehensive written report and a feedback session to discuss the findings in plain language. We also offer guidance on next steps — whether that's accessing the NDIS, applying for school funding, or pursuing further therapy.

- Cognitive and adaptive behaviour assessments
- A comprehensive written report
- A feedback session with your family to walk through findings and next steps
Cost, Medicare & NDIS
Autism assessments are privately billed. NDIS participants with a plan that includes psychology assessment funding may be able to use those funds. Some families access funding through NDIS pre-access pathways (e.g. early childhood approach for children under 9). Contact us to discuss fees and what may apply to your situation.
Do I Need a Referral?
A GP or paediatrician referral is not required to begin an autism assessment at Spectrum House. However, working alongside your child's paediatrician is helpful when finalising a diagnosis. A GP referral (Mental Health Treatment Plan) supports Medicare rebates for therapy sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an autism assessment confirm a diagnosis?
Our registered psychologists provide a clinical formulation and can complete a diagnostic conclusion. For NDIS access purposes, a multidisciplinary or psychiatrist-confirmed diagnosis may be required in some cases — we will advise you based on your situation.
What is the ADOS-2?
The ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) is the gold-standard observational assessment tool for autism. It involves structured activities and free play used to observe and assess social communication and behaviour in a natural, child-friendly way.
Can the assessment help with NDIS access?
Yes. Our diagnostic reports meet the evidence requirements for NDIS access requests. We can also write supporting letters if required as part of the access process.
How long does an autism assessment take?
Our autism assessments span 2–4 appointments depending on the child's age and profile. We allow adequate time for each component to ensure accuracy.
